On my Canon EOS 450D, the viewfinder display shows exposure information like shutter speed and aperture, and there is also a number on the far right. For example, I might see something like:

30" 2.8 |''|''|''|''| 100 6

What does that final number indicate?

It looks like you might be asking about the maximum burst number. It tells you how many pictures you can take before the buffer is full. As you take pictures, the number will go down, and it will go back up as the buffer clears to the memory card. Taking pictures closer together (or using continuous) will deplete the buffer faster.

On the Canon 450D, the number at the far right of the viewfinder is the remaining burst count: how many more shots you can take in continuous shooting before the camera’s buffer fills up.

As you shoot rapidly, that number drops. It rises again as the camera finishes writing images from the buffer to the memory card. If you shoot single frames with pauses, you may never notice it change much, but in continuous drive it becomes more obvious.

So in your example, the “6” means the camera estimates it can capture about 6 more images before the buffer is full.
