On my Canon PowerShot SX420 IS, a blinking orange camera symbol appears when I half-press the shutter button to focus. What does this warning mean, and do I need to change any settings or do anything to fix it?

The Canon PowerShot SX420 IS User Guide (page 30) says that it's a camera shake warning. It shows up when you use a shutter speed that's slower than some minimum. In this case, your shutter speed is set for 1 second, which is considered too slow to hand hold. You'd need to use a tripod or other support to take a motion-blur free photograph.

The blinking orange camera icon is a camera-shake warning. It appears when the camera is using a very slow shutter speed—like 1 second in your example—which is usually too slow to handhold without blur.

It’s not a fault with the camera. It means your photo may come out blurry from camera movement, and moving subjects may blur too.

To reduce or avoid the warning:

  • use a tripod or other stable support
  • increase ISO so the camera can use a faster shutter speed
  • add more light if possible

If the camera is on a tripod and your subject is still, you can usually ignore the warning. But for handheld shots, a 1-second shutter speed is very likely to cause blur.
