What does a camera lens sold as a “white box” item mean, and does it still have a USA warranty?

I found a Canon EF-S 18-135mm lens listed as a “white box” item for use with a Canon T3i. I understand that “white box” often means the lens was originally part of a kit and is being sold separately in plain packaging instead of the retail box.
Are there any real drawbacks to buying a white-box lens? In particular, should it still include the normal USA manufacturer warranty, or does that depend on the seller and whether the item is a USA-authorized product rather than grey market?

B&H has a long and strong tradition of taking the manufacturer's or official distributor's intent under advisement, and yes, the price you pay for the resulting savings is often the US warranty (for "grey market" items). In a case like this, they may have found it to be the cheapest way to put together an intraoral kit for dentists (take the body from an unpopular kit, add an off-brand macro lens, ring light and case, leaving them with a kit lens to sell).
If you see "USA" in the item title, though, the item is covered by the manufacturer's USA warranty. See http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/GreyMarketStatic.jsp for details (that's linked from the "USA" in the lens's item title).

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
“White box” usually means the item is being sold in plain packaging instead of the standard retail box, often because it was originally part of a kit and was separated for resale. That by itself is not necessarily a problem.
The main thing to verify is warranty status. A white-box item may still carry the full USA manufacturer warranty if it is a USA-authorized product. If the listing specifically says “USA warranty” or otherwise indicates it is a USA item, that’s a good sign. If it is grey market, warranty coverage may differ or be handled by the seller instead of the manufacturer.
So the drawback is usually packaging and sometimes warranty uncertainty—not the fact that it’s white box alone. If the listing does not clearly state warranty coverage, ask the seller before buying.
In short: white box can be perfectly fine, but confirm whether it is a USA-authorized item and what warranty applies.
