What clothing colors work best for portrait sessions?

When advising portrait clients on what to wear, how should clothing color be chosen? I recently photographed an urban portrait session where the subject’s dress introduced an unwanted color cast in some images. Should wardrobe recommendations depend on the background and location, and are there any colors or patterns that generally work better or worse for portraits?

I'm going to take the opposite position as those saying "neutral" or "dark". I think that color of your model's clothing is such an important element of the content, that you shouldn't try to sedate it.

For example, here's various portraits with bright colored clothing.

This one even has four different clothing colors. And it's still great.

Subject color is too important to give up. You should be working on avoiding the color cast in other ways (lighting, filters, distance to background, Photoshop) first.

There isn’t one universal “best” color. Clothing should be chosen with the portrait’s look, the subject, and the background in mind.

A practical approach is to ask clients to bring multiple outfits in different colors. That gives you options once you see how each one works with the location, lighting, and skin tones.

Some photographers prefer darker, richer tones such as navy, burgundy, and gray, which often photograph well and feel less distracting. Others specifically avoid telling clients to stay neutral, because strong color can be an important part of the portrait and add life to the image.

Background matters: a color that works beautifully in one setting may clash or create casts in another. If a garment is causing unwanted color spill, try solving that with lighting, subject/background distance, filtration, or post-processing rather than assuming all bright clothing should be avoided.

As a general guideline, avoid relying only on pure black or pure white, and encourage at least one outfit with some color. Colorful patterns can also work if they fit the style of the session.
