What causes bright flare and circular ghosting with a Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens?

I captured two photos with a Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and noticed unusual bright artifacts.

In the first image, there is a bright white area in the lower-right corner. In the second image, there are circular shapes near the center.

Both were shot at f/8, ISO 100, 1/125s. One was taken at 85mm and the other at 15mm, with the sun involved in the scene or just outside the frame.

What is causing these artifacts, and is there a way to reduce or avoid them?

It is "lens flare" in the first, but in the second, it is the reflection of the black internal parts of the front of your lens which are illuminated by the direct sun reflecting off the inside of your UV filter.

These artifacts are lens flare and ghosting. They happen when a strong light source, especially the sun, hits the lens directly or from just outside the frame and reflects between lens elements. That can show up as a washed-out bright patch, reduced contrast, or a series of circles/rings.

In your second image, the circles are likely ghost reflections made worse by a front UV filter. Filters can add extra reflective surfaces, so light can bounce between the filter and the lens and create those circular shapes.

To reduce it:

  • use a lens hood when the light source is outside the frame
  • recompose slightly so the sun is in a different position
  • shade the lens with your hand if needed
  • remove the UV filter if flare is a problem
  • keep the front glass/filter clean

So the lens is not necessarily faulty; this is a common optical effect in strong light.
