What can I use to move a camera or lens tripod mount forward by about 2 inches?

I have a heavy 3D-printed lens attachment that makes my small tripod setup front-heavy. I’d like to relocate the 1/4"-20 mounting point forward by roughly 2 inches so the rig balances better. Is there a product or type of bracket made for shifting the tripod mount position forward?

It's called a cheese plate; like this one from SmallRig.

You would use a 1/4-20 screw through one of the 3/8 holes into the current socket on the body; and then use any of the 1/4-20 holes in the cheese plate to mount to.

Yes. A few common accessories can do this.

  • A cheese plate can offset the mounting point by attaching to your camera’s existing tripod socket, then letting you use a different threaded hole farther forward.
  • A rail-style bracket can also work, such as an off-camera flash bracket rail or a simple macro focusing rail/sled with tripod mounts.
  • If the weight is mainly on the lens side, a tripod collar (tripod mount ring) is often the better solution, because it supports the lens directly and improves balance.

The thread you’re looking for is typically 1/4-20. Some plates use 3/8" holes as well, often with an adapter or screw arrangement.

If the setup is unusually heavy, supporting the lens or attachment rather than just shifting the camera body mount is usually the safer and more stable approach.
