What camera gear should I bring to a photography club meeting or outing?

I'm planning to join a photography club and I'm not sure what equipment to take. Do people usually bring a full kit every time—camera, extra lenses, tripod, flash—or is it better to choose gear based on the meeting location and activity? I'm also unsure how photo clubs typically operate: are some meetings mostly social while others involve walking around and shooting?

My experience from the two photo clubs I have been a member of, is that there are two kinds of gatherings. There are meetings where you just meet and don't photograph, and there are outings where you do photograph. Well, that's how swedes do it at least, there are of course variations.

If you are going to photograph, I would say that you generally just bring what you think that you might need. If you bring too much, people might think that you are just trying to show off, so keep it down at least until you have seen what the crowd is and what they bring.

It depends on the type of club event. Many photography clubs have a mix of meetings and shooting outings. Some gatherings are mostly social—people talk, share images, and discuss photography—while others are dedicated photo walks or location shoots.

A good approach is to bring a camera and keep the rest simple unless you know you’ll need more. For many informal meetups, people may bring a camera because they enjoy photography, but not necessarily a tripod, flash, or lots of extra lenses. For outings, choose gear based on the location and what you expect to shoot.

If you’re unsure, start light: camera, one versatile lens, and maybe one extra item only if it clearly fits the plan. After you’ve attended once or twice, you’ll get a feel for how that specific club operates and what others typically bring.
