I’m looking for a battery grip/external battery option for a Nikon D7100 and I’m seeing a lot of different versions online. Does Nikon make an official battery grip for this camera, or do I need to buy a third-party model? If third-party grips are an option, what’s the main trade-off compared with the Nikon version?

They make the MB-D15

I have one of these and love it. The challenge/benefit with third party ones are:
Challenges: Can be lower quality. Check out reviews. Generally people like Photix grip.
Benefits: Lower cost.

Yes. Nikon’s official battery grip for the D7100 is the MB-D15 Multi Power Battery Pack. If you want the Nikon-made option, that’s the correct model.
Third-party grips are also available and are often cheaper. The usual trade-off is build quality and consistency: some work well, but quality can vary more than with the Nikon version, so it’s worth checking user reviews carefully.
In short:
- Official Nikon grip: MB-D15
- Third-party grips: lower cost, but quality may vary
If you want the safest choice for fit, finish, and long-term use with the camera, the Nikon MB-D15 is the straightforward pick.
