When looking through an optical viewfinder, many cameras show small illuminated symbols or readouts around the frame, such as exposure, focus, flash, or other shooting-status information. Is there a general name for these viewfinder symbols/indicators?

Canon simply call it "Viewfinder Information". Manual - see p19, nomenclature.

There isn’t one universal technical term used by all camera makers. They’re commonly described as things like:

  • viewfinder information
  • viewfinder status indicators
  • viewfinder display information
  • shooting information display
  • viewfinder indicators / display lights

In other words, the general idea is “viewfinder information” or “viewfinder status indicators,” but the exact wording varies by brand and manual.
