I recently moved from a point-and-shoot to a Canon Rebel T2i DSLR and I’m not yet comfortable with the camera settings or how to use them effectively. What beginner-friendly resources would help me learn DSLR photography fundamentals, especially material aimed at people transitioning from point-and-shoot cameras?

John Greengo's course in creativeLIVE is fantastic for beginners. It will teach you the fundamentals of photography (with bias toward DSLR cameras) - from camera control to image composition. It is long (a few hours of watch) but excellent and thorough.

The same instructor also gave intro courses for specific cameras:

Canon T2i
Nikon D3100
Canon 60D
Nikon D7000

A strong beginner option mentioned by the community is John Greengo’s CreativeLive course. It’s recommended as a thorough introduction to DSLR photography, covering core fundamentals like camera controls, exposure, and composition.

That makes it a good fit for someone moving from a point-and-shoot to a DSLR, because it focuses on understanding what the settings do rather than just memorizing them. The course is described as long but comprehensive, which is often helpful when you’re starting from scratch.

The community also noted that the same instructor has camera-specific intro courses, including one for the Canon T2i. A model-specific course can be especially useful alongside a general photography class, since it helps you connect the concepts directly to the buttons, menus, and features on your camera.

A practical learning path would be:

  1. Start with a general beginner DSLR course to learn exposure and composition.
  2. Use a Canon T2i-specific guide or course to learn your camera’s controls.
  3. Practice regularly in aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual modes to reinforce what you learn.
