I’m familiar with Canon resources like The-Digital-Picture and am now considering buying a used Nikon DSLR. Before I invest in Nikon lenses, I’d like some reliable Nikon-focused websites or communities that cover reviews, lens comparisons, terminology, and buying advice. What are the best online resources for researching Nikon cameras and lenses?

Try Thom Hogan's site. He is a professional photographer who uses Nikon gear and writes a lot about them and I do mean a lot. Unlike another Nikon photographer, his opinions are usually very well balanced.

Several well-known resources can help when researching Nikon gear:

  • Thom Hogan: widely recommended for detailed Nikon-specific articles and balanced opinions.
  • NikonGear.com: offers reviews plus an active Nikon-oriented forum.
  • NikonCafe: a very active community with discussion and user feedback on Nikon bodies and lenses.
  • Ken Rockwell: has extensive Nikon equipment coverage, sample images, comparisons, and explanations of Nikon terms like AF-S, VR, ED, and AI-S, though it’s wise to read critically and compare with other sources.
  • DPReview: not Nikon-only, but it has strong camera and lens reviews and active discussion forums.
  • DTown TV: also not Nikon-only, but useful for gear and technique, especially in podcast/video format.

A good approach is to cross-check a few of these sources rather than relying on just one, especially when comparing older Nikon lenses or deciding what offers the best value.
