I’m new to photography and have a Canon EOS Rebel SL3. A friend gave me these older lenses, and I’d like to know what adapter I need to mount them on my camera:

  • Promaster SP MC Zoom 80-200mm f/4.5
  • Soligor MC Zoom+Macro 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5
  • SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/2

I’m not familiar with lens mounts yet, so I’m trying to understand where to start and whether these lenses will work well on the SL3.

Assuming that all three lenses were for the same “vintage” camera, you will need a Pentax K mount to Canon EF-S mount adapter.

These lenses will be manual focus and manual aperture only. They might be difficult to use for a beginner, and the optical quality is probably not as good as your kit lens.

If these lenses all came from the same system as the SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/2, then you’d be looking for a Pentax K to Canon EF/EF-S adapter for your Rebel SL3.

A few important notes:

  • These lenses will be manual focus only.
  • You’ll also set aperture manually on the lens.
  • They may be harder for a beginner to use than a modern Canon lens.
  • Image quality may not be as good as your current kit lens.

Before buying an adapter, confirm the mount on each lens, since third-party lenses like Promaster and Soligor were often made in several different mounts. The Pentax-M lens is Pentax K mount, but the other two may or may not match it.

So: identify the mount on each lens first, then buy the matching adapter. If they are all Pentax K, one Pentax K to Canon EF/EF-S adapter should work.
