Sony RX100 IV EVF pops up in a pocket and turns the camera on — defect or warranty issue?

My Sony RX100 IV is about 5 months old. I bought it as a pocketable alternative to a larger DSLR, but when I carry it in my pocket it sometimes turns on and extends the lens. Each time this happens, the electronic viewfinder has popped up, even though I never use it.

It seems like the EVF latch may not be staying locked. Is this a known issue with a simple fix, or does it sound like a defect that should be checked under warranty?

Authorized service would be the most certain way to determine if it is a defect. If the camera is under warranty, a warranty claim will help the manufacturer correct the manufacture/design issue if one exists.

If the EVF is popping up on its own and causing the camera to power on, the safest conclusion is that the latch or mechanism may be faulty. The most reliable next step is to have it checked by authorized service.

Since the camera is only about 5 months old, a warranty claim is the best route if it’s still covered. That will confirm whether it’s an individual defect or a broader design/manufacturing issue.

A temporary workaround like tape might stop the finder from popping up, but it won’t address the underlying problem and could interfere with normal operation. For a camera this new, warranty service is the sensible option.
