Should I retouch skin in Photoshop before or after color grading in Lightroom?

For portrait or fashion photos, does the order of editing matter? Specifically, is it better to do skin retouching in Photoshop first and then color correction/color grading in Lightroom, or should I color grade first and then send the image to Photoshop?

I always do the color grading stuff before, because if done after retouching it can make the editing more visible. The edited parts are always a bit different from their surroundings and will react differently to the color tools.

Yes, the order can matter. A common approach is to do your global color correction and grading first, then retouch in Photoshop.

Why: after retouching, the edited areas can respond a little differently to later color adjustments than the surrounding skin or background. If you apply strong color changes after retouching, those retouched areas may become more noticeable.

So a practical workflow is:

  1. Start with Lightroom for overall exposure, white balance, and color/look.
  2. Send the image to Photoshop for skin retouching and detailed local edits.
  3. If needed, make only small final tweaks afterward.

In short: it’s usually safer to do major color work before detailed retouching, especially for portraits and fashion images where smooth skin transitions matter.
