Photo viewer for culling images with EXIF display and delete option

I’m learning DSLR photography and often shoot several versions of the same subject with different settings. On the computer, I want a fast way to compare images, see each photo’s EXIF data, and delete the weaker shots without switching back to the file system. Is there a photo viewer or organizer that can display the image, show EXIF in a side panel or overlay, and let me delete files directly while browsing?

For Windows, you can use PMView Pro. It will show EXIF information in the Information panel. Once you open that panel, it sill stay open. Use PgUp and PgDown to navigate between images and press DEL to delete. It's that simple!

For Linux, try Geeqie. It works similarly and is quick too. They have a simple overlay which shows basic EXIF information which stays visible as you switch files. Pressing DEL also deletes images. When you want to see the full EXIF data, you have to open a popup.

Those are the two ones I use because they are so fast but that functionality is available elsewhere too. The main point with these is that you can go through images and delete them before importing them into Lightroom or other DAM Software which is slower and not really worth it for the images you delete.

Yes — several tools can do this.

For a fast viewer-style workflow, community suggestions include:

  • PMView Pro on Windows: shows EXIF in an information panel and lets you browse quickly and delete with the keyboard.
  • Geeqie on Linux: fast browsing, basic EXIF overlay, fuller EXIF in a popup, and direct delete support.

If you want a more complete photo-management workflow, Lightroom was the strongest recommendation. Besides viewing EXIF, it adds rating, flags, color labels, keywords, sorting, and filtering, which makes culling many similar shots much easier than deleting files one by one.

Other alternatives mentioned were XnView MP, Picasa, Darktable, RAWTherapee, and your camera maker’s bundled software, which often includes EXIF viewing.

So the best choice depends on your goal:

  • Quick viewer + delete: PMView Pro or Geeqie
  • Full organizing/culling system: Lightroom
  • Free alternatives: XnView MP, Picasa, Darktable, RAWTherapee
