Nikon D610 shows “ERR” with 50mm f/1.4G at smaller apertures

On a Nikon D610, my AF-S 50mm f/1.4G works normally at wide apertures (about f/1.4 to f/2), but the camera shows “ERR” when I set f/2.2 or smaller. A different lens works fine on the same body. This started after changing lenses during a shoot. What could cause this, and what should I check first?

I have searched for this issue and people are suggesting you clean the contacts of the lens. If this does not work there is nothing you can do except contact a service center.

This usually points to an aperture-control problem rather than a general camera failure, especially since another lens works normally.

Most likely causes:

  • Dirty or misaligned lens/body contacts
  • A bent or misaligned mechanical aperture lever on the camera body or the rear of the lens

Because Nikon F-mount DSLRs use a mechanical stop-down lever, it can sometimes get bent slightly during a lens change if the lens isn’t lined up correctly. That can cause the lens to work near wide open but fail when the camera tries to stop down further, triggering “ERR.”

What to do:

  1. Remove the lens and inspect/clean the electrical contacts carefully.
  2. Check the aperture lever in the camera mount area and the corresponding lever on the lens for obvious misalignment.
  3. If the lever looks bent, don’t force it aggressively. A slight misalignment may be correctable, but the safest solution is service.

If cleaning doesn’t help, the lens or body likely needs inspection by a Nikon service center or repair shop.
