New Nikon D5300 beeps and shows focus confirmation, but the image isn't focused for 2–3 seconds

My new Nikon D5300 gives an autofocus beep and shows the green focus confirmation dot almost immediately when I half-press the shutter, but the subject still isn't actually in focus until about 2–3 seconds later. Manual focus works normally. I've tested three different lenses and tried changing settings, and the same thing happens in different lighting conditions, on a tripod, and even with a remote release. Is this a known issue, or does it sound like a camera fault?

I would suggest this is a fault with the camera (as you have tried different lenses). As your D5300 is new, I would take it back to the shop I bought it from and they should repair or replace it.

Given that it happens with three different lenses, in different lighting, and after changing settings, this points to a fault with the camera body rather than normal autofocus behavior.
On a working D5300, focus confirmation should correspond closely with actual focus. If the camera beeps and shows the green focus dot but the image still takes another 2–3 seconds to come into focus, that is not expected operation.
Since the camera is new, the practical answer is to return it to the retailer or Nikon service for inspection, repair, or replacement.
