I'm learning panoramic photography and wondering whether there is a recommended aspect ratio for panoramas. I often end up around 4:1, but I haven't found any standard size or proportion. Is there a common rule of thumb, or does it depend on the subject and intended display?

As others point out, there is no standard. I personally use somewhere between 2:1 to 3:1. I like 3:1 because 36x12 inch frames are easy to find and therefore cheap.

There isn’t a single standard aspect ratio for panoramic photos. In practice, the “right” ratio depends on the scene, how you want the image to feel, and how you plan to display or print it.
Common panorama formats have included ratios such as 1:2, 1:3, 2:5, and 6:17, so panoramas can vary quite a bit. Many photographers prefer something in the 2:1 to 3:1 range because it often looks balanced and can be easier to frame or print. A 4:1 panorama is also perfectly valid, though some viewers may find very wide images start to feel a bit thin depending on the subject.
A good rule of thumb is to crop to the aspect ratio that best suits the composition rather than forcing a fixed standard. If the image works visually, the exact proportion matters less than the final result.
