I’m considering the Pentax smc D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro for use on a Pentax K-r. Is it fully compatible with the K-r body, and would it be a good choice for sharp close-up insect and nature photography?

Yes, it is compatible. The Pentax K-r has the usual PENTAX K (KAF2) bayonet mount and the smc DA 100/2.8 WR has Pentax KAF. Nearly all Pentax K items are compatible to each other, including backwards compatibility for it's additional features.

is this going to be a good buy for sharp close up insect/nature shots etc?

It has a 1:1 magnification, which means that the object you are photographing has the same size on the sensor. The minimal focus length is 30.3cm, at 100 mm. Note that the camera has a crop factor of ~1.5x, so the focal length compared to 35mm film is 150mm. Also, as it is weather resistant, you can shoot in rain, humid and dusty conditions and in wet grass.

Yes. The Pentax K-r uses the Pentax K/KAF2 mount, and this 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro is compatible with it.

It’s also a strong choice for close-up insect and nature work. The lens offers true 1:1 macro magnification, so subjects can be recorded life-size on the sensor, which is what you typically want for detailed macro photography. Its minimum focus distance is about 30.3 cm, and on the K-r’s APS-C sensor the field of view is similar to a 150mm lens on full frame, giving a tighter view that can be helpful for small subjects.

The weather-resistant design is another advantage for outdoor shooting in damp, dusty, or grassy conditions.
