I have a Nikon D3300 body and am considering the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR as a telephoto zoom. Will this lens work properly on the D3300, including autofocus and VR, or are there any compatibility limits or firmware requirements I should know about?

This lens is compatible with D3000 series cameras from the D3300 onwards, D5000 series cameras from the D5200 onwards, and D7000 series cameras from the D7100 onwards. The D500 is also compatible. Please note that compatible cameras may require a firmware update.

I believe the firmware update would be necessary if the D3300 is using version 1 of the firmware, because that didn't support AF-P.

Yes — the Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR is compatible with the Nikon D3300. The D3300 is one of the supported D3000-series bodies for this AF-P lens.

The main thing to check is firmware: some compatible Nikon bodies need a firmware update for AF-P lens support. If your D3300 is on early firmware, you may need to update it first. Once updated, the lens should work normally, including autofocus and VR.

So the short answer is: yes, it should work well on your D3300, but confirm your camera firmware is up to date before buying or using the lens.
