Is the Nikon AF-D 50mm f/1.8 a good buy for low-light concert photography on a Nikon D70s?

I have a chance to buy a Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF-D and want to know whether it’s a good lens, especially for low-light gigs and concerts. I’d be using it on a Nikon D70s, so I’m also wondering how the camera’s crop sensor affects the field of view and whether that focal length will be practical indoors.

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is a wonderful lens. It is also really cheap. So don't hesitate, go for it. That's the lens everybody should have in my opinion.

Yes — the Nikon AF-D 50mm f/1.8 is widely regarded as a very good, inexpensive prime and is a solid choice if you need a faster lens for low-light shooting.

On your Nikon D70s, the 1.5x crop factor makes it behave like roughly a 75mm equivalent in field of view. That can be useful for concert photography, where the extra reach helps isolate performers, but it may feel a bit tight indoors or in very small venues.

The main benefit is the wide f/1.8 aperture, which lets in much more light than slower zooms and can make low-light shooting much easier. Several photographers consider it a “must-have” Nikon lens because of its combination of image quality, speed, and value.

So if your goal is better low-light performance for gigs, it’s a sensible lens to add. Just keep in mind that on a D70s it’s closer to a short telephoto than a “normal” lens.
