Is photo editing necessary, especially for photo contests?

Editing is not always necessary, but some level of adjustment is often normal. The most important thing is to start with a strong photo: good light, composition, and perspective matter more than software.

Whether to edit depends on your goal. If the image already matches what you want to express, you may not need editing. If it needs a better crop, exposure or color correction, glare reduction, or small cleanup, then light editing can help.

For contests, the key is the rules. Some contests allow normal post-processing, while others strictly limit edits. Judges usually care about the final image, but in some categories realism and originality also matter, so avoid heavy editing unless the contest permits it.

• use editing to improve, not rescue, a weak photo
