Is loud, abrupt autofocus on a used Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 HSM normal or a defect?

I bought a used Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM for my Canon EOS 80D. Autofocus is fast, but it is much louder and more abrupt than I expected: instead of a smooth transition, focus seems to jump between points with an audible clattering noise before locking. This happens with both viewfinder AF and Live View AF. Manual focus is quiet.
Reviews of this lens generally describe the autofocus as fairly quiet, so I’m trying to determine whether this behavior is normal for this lens or a sign of a problem. If it is a defect, could it be specific to this lens copy rather than the camera body? And if the lens still focuses correctly, is it safe to keep using it or could the noise indicate wear that may get worse over time?

I think the lens is defective. As they usually not that load as you explained, had few Sigma lenses in the past. What I recommend is get the lens checked. As it could be some serious mechanical issues that would wear the lens soon

This does not sound normal. Sigma HSM lenses are generally expected to autofocus relatively quietly, so loud clattering and abrupt focus jumps suggest your copy may have a mechanical issue.
Because manual focus is quiet, the problem is likely related to the autofocus mechanism rather than normal handling noise. It’s more likely to be a fault with this specific lens than something inherent to the Canon 80D.
If the lens is making unusual noise, it’s best to have it checked or return it if possible. Even if it still focuses, abnormal mechanical noise can indicate wear or a developing fault that may worsen over time.
