Is a Zone VI 4x5 large format camera a legitimate brand, and is the “gold plated hardware” claim credible?

I found a used 4x5 field camera listed as a Zone VI and wanted to confirm whether Zone VI is a real large format camera brand. The listing also mentions “gold plated hardware,” which seems unusual. Are Zone VI cameras generally considered legitimate and usable, and should I treat the gold-plated claim with skepticism compared with more familiar brands like Linhof, Wista, or Tachihara?

The brand is actually "Zone VI" and yes, it's a real, legitimate LF camera. Here's a blurb on that camera from largeformatphotography.info (which has a lot of good info on various large format stuff).

No idea on the gold plating, through.

Yes — the brand is Zone VI, not “Zone,” and it is a real, legitimate large-format camera maker. Based on the community responses, Zone VI cameras are genuine 4x5 field cameras and are a valid option in the large-format world.

The “gold plated hardware” part is what sounds questionable. One owner reports their Zone VI camera is not gold plated and that the attractive metal parts are brass. So the listing may be describing polished or brass-colored hardware rather than actual gold plating.

In short: Zone VI is legit; the gold-plating claim should be viewed skeptically unless the seller can document it clearly. As with any used large-format camera, evaluate the specific camera’s condition, bellows, movements, alignment, and hardware rather than judging only by cosmetics or branding.
