I want to print a photo on canvas at 40×22 inches. The file is listed as 96 dpi. Will that still produce a clear print at that size? If not, what resolution should I be aiming for?

"96 dpi" by itself doesn’t tell you enough. What matters most is the image’s pixel dimensions.
For a 40×22 inch print, a common target is:
- 300 ppi for very high quality: about 12000×6600 pixels
- 150–200 ppi is often acceptable for canvas, since canvas texture and normal viewing distance hide detail: about 6000×3300 to 8000×4400 pixels
If your file is only tagged as 96 dpi but has plenty of pixels, it may still print well. If it has low pixel dimensions, it may look soft when enlarged to 40×22 inches.
Canvas is more forgiving than glossy photo paper, so you usually don’t need full 300 ppi, especially for a large wall print viewed from a distance.
Check the image width and height in pixels, then divide by the print size in inches to find the actual ppi. That will tell you whether it’s suitable.
