Is a 35mm f/1.8 lens good for product photography and hotel room interiors?

I'm a beginner and want to photograph two things: small to medium e-commerce products and hotel room interiors. Would a 35mm f/1.8 lens work well for both, or is it the wrong focal length for these uses?

Not really.

  • For hotel rooms you will need a rather wide angle-lens (35mm max, ideally 20mm or less for a full-frame sensor, 20mm max, ideally 15mm or less for crop sensor) because you rarely have enough space (unless you are shooting luxury suites in palaces, and even then...)
  • For product photography (objects 10-50cm in size) you need a somewhat long lens (around 50mm for crop sensor, 80mm for FF) so that you are far enough to not introduce perspective distortion (the "big nose" syndrome when shooting people) even if this less critical.

A 35mm f/1.8 is not the best single choice for both jobs.

For hotel room interiors, you usually need a wider lens because spaces are tight. On full frame, 35mm is about the widest you could get away with, but around 20mm or wider is usually more useful. On a crop-sensor camera, 35mm is generally too narrow; around 15–20mm is more suitable.

For product photography, a slightly longer focal length is often better so you can stand farther back and reduce perspective distortion. Roughly 50mm on crop sensor or around 80mm on full frame is a better starting point for products in the 10–50 cm range.

So: 35mm can be usable in some cases, especially on full frame for interiors, but it is not ideal as one lens for both product and hotel room photography.
