How large should photos be for uploading to eBay, and why might larger images still fail?

I'm editing photos in Picasa 3 and uploading them to eBay. eBay says the image needs to be at least 500 pixels on the longest side, but some of my uploads are still being rejected. I tried resizing images to dimensions like 800×1024, but I keep getting the same message. What size should the image actually be, and what should I check if a photo larger than 500 pixels still won't upload?

Reading some eBay documentation.

https://pages.ebay.co.uk/picture/guidelines.html and https://www.ebay.com/sellercenter/listings/photo-tips

need to be 500 pixels on the longest side

It is recommended that the image has at least 500px on the longest side. But it can have more.

These websites automatically resize and recompress larger images.

So in theory, your image of 800x1024px should work. If it still does not work, it would be useful if you post a screen capture of the error message.

E-commerce websites like eBay prefer square images, so, consider cropping them into a square. The space available for the main image is 500x500px.

The higher resolution image will be used when you zoom in on the image.

A smaller image of 223x223px for the general listing will also be created.

eBay’s guideline is generally that the photo should be at least 500 pixels on the longest side, so an 800×1024 image should normally be acceptable. Larger images are often resized automatically by the site.

A few practical things to check:

  • Make sure the resized file was actually saved/exported before uploading.
  • Confirm the image dimensions after saving, not just the resize setting you selected.
  • Try cropping to a square format, since marketplace sites often display main images in a square area.
  • If the site’s wording is unclear, test a few simple square files such as 450×450, 500×500, and 550×550 to see what it accepts.
  • If all of those fail, capture the exact error message, because the problem may be something other than pixel dimensions.

If Picasa is making this difficult, a simple image tool like IrfanView can also resize images easily.
