How do I use second-curtain sync on a Canon 50D, and why does my Speedlite flash twice?

I want to use rear/second-curtain sync on a Canon 50D with a Canon Speedlite, and possibly with a wireless trigger like a PocketWizard. When I test it, the flash seems to fire once when the shutter opens and again when it closes. I only want the flash at the end of the exposure. Is the first burst just E-TTL pre-flash, and can it be disabled? Also, can second-curtain sync work when using PocketWizards or other non-Canon wireless triggers?

Unfortunately there is no way to get a Canon DSLR to actually send the flash signal when the shutter is about to close! Canon flashes know the shutter speed so they can delay the firing. When using a flash that doesn't talk to the camera you can't get second curtain sync. However, when using a Pocketwizard, you can set the Pocketwizard to add the appropriate delay to get the flash to fire with the second curtain (I think only some models e.g. Pocketwizard multimax allow this).
When set to second curtain sync the first flash is actually before the shutter opens and is for metering purposes (e-TTL as you suggest). To turn this off you'll have to use the flash in manual mode.

What looks like “two flashes” is usually an E-TTL pre-flash plus the actual exposure flash. The pre-flash happens before the exposure for metering; only the second burst lights the photo. If you want to avoid that pre-flash, use the Speedlite in manual flash mode instead of E-TTL.
On Canon bodies, rear-curtain sync works with compatible Canon Speedlites that communicate with the camera, typically when mounted on the hot shoe or connected via a Canon-compatible cord/system. Some Canon bodies also offer a custom function for 2nd-curtain sync.
With non-communicating triggers, the camera does not send a special “fire at shutter close” signal. In that case, second-curtain sync generally won’t work unless the trigger itself can add a delay to simulate it. Some higher-end PocketWizard models can do that, but a basic manual trigger cannot.
So in short:
- the first flash is usually metering pre-flash, not part of the exposure
- switch to manual flash to eliminate pre-flash
- rear-curtain sync requires camera/flash communication, or a trigger that can add its own delay
