How do I transfer photos from a Canon EOS 350D/Rebel XT to a computer?

I inherited a Canon EOS 350D (Rebel XT) and want to view the photos on my computer before selling the camera. Connecting it by USB makes the computer react, but the Canon software does not detect the camera. What card type does this camera use, and what is the easiest way to transfer the images? Is there a camera setting I should check for USB connection?

This camera uses Compact Flash (CF) cards. You can buy a decent multiple-format USB card reader which has CF support for under $20. You can even buy just-CF readers for less than that. This should Just Work, without any hassle. And, as a bonus, if you're planning to sell the camera, you can thrown in the reader so that your buyer doesn't have any hassle either.

The EOS 350D uses a CompactFlash (CF) card, not SD. The simplest and most reliable way to copy the photos is usually to remove the CF card and use a USB card reader that supports CompactFlash.
If you want to try direct USB first, check the camera’s Communication setting in the menu and switch between the available options (commonly Print/PTP and PC connection). Some computers/software detect one mode better than the other.
