How do I reset a photo to its original state in RawTherapee?

I edited a photo in RawTherapee and want to discard all edits and return to the default/original processing state. Is there a built-in way to clear all adjustments? Also, can RawTherapee show the edit history so I can undo only some changes instead of resetting everything?

Switch to the File Browser view and find your image. Right click on the little green check mark and select "Processing profile options" followed by "Clear". That will reset the sidecar file to the unedited / default state.

For partial reverts, in the History pane on the left, click on the step you're interested in keeping - the ones after (below) that will be undone. Selective reverts are a bit more involved, and involve the "Apply (partial)" option under the above-mentioned "Processing profile options".

Yes. In RawTherapee, edits are typically stored in a sidecar file (.pp3), not written into the original raw file.

To reset an image from within RawTherapee:

  • Go to the File Browser.
  • Find the image.
  • Right-click the green check mark.
  • Choose Processing profile options > Clear.

That clears the saved processing settings and returns the image to the default/unedited state.

If you want to reset outside the program, close RawTherapee and delete the image’s .pp3 sidecar file. When you reopen the image, it will start with the default profile again.

For partial undo:

  • Use the History panel on the left.
  • Click the step you want to return to; later steps will be undone.

For more selective reverts, RawTherapee also offers Apply (partial) under Processing profile options, which can help restore only certain groups of settings.
