I want to remove the standard triangular strap rings on my Nikon D7000. Each ring has a small plastic cover. What's the safe way to take the plastic covers off and remove the rings without damaging them, so I can reinstall both later if needed?

I have done this on my D800, I assume they are exactly the same.
So first remove the plastic clips, just push them HARD towards the on-camera mounting post, they should just pop off.
Then remove the triangular rings, they are VERY stuff so you may need a flat-head screwdriver to pry the end open, just rotate them around like a key-ring and off they come.
I NEVER use a strap, and these are very annoying jiggling about all the time...

Yes—these covers are designed to come off and be reinstalled.
First, remove the plastic cover by pushing it firmly toward the camera’s strap mounting post/lug until it pops free. Then remove the triangular split ring the same way you would a key ring: find the split, pry the end open if needed with a small flat-head screwdriver, and rotate the ring around until it comes off the lug.
The rings can be quite stiff, so work slowly to avoid scratching the camera body. Using a small tool carefully can help, but don’t force it against the camera finish. If you want a visual guide, a video demonstration can make the motion much clearer.
Reinstallation is just the reverse: rotate the split ring back onto the lug, then snap the plastic cover back into place.
