How do I recharge the Nikon D5100's internal clock backup battery?

My Nikon D5100 resets the date and time every time I turn it on. The manual says the internal backup battery needs about three days to recharge and can then hold the clock for around a month. Do I need to leave the camera switched on for those three days, or is it enough to leave a fully charged EN-EL14 battery installed in the camera?

You can put a charged EN-EL 14 battery and the internal battery should recharge as it charges both from an AC adapter or a battery.
I usually leave the battery on the camera anyway, even though the manual says you should remove it if you don't use the camera for a long time. I like to be able to pick it up and start shooting right away :)

You do not need to leave the camera switched on. On the D5100, the internal clock backup battery recharges when a charged EN-EL14 is installed, just as it would when powered by an AC adapter. So the practical approach is to insert a fully charged battery and leave it in the camera for the recommended charging period.
If the clock still resets after that, the internal backup cell may no longer be holding much charge due to age.
