How do I make Windows ask what to do when I insert an SD card?

When I insert an SD card into my Windows computer, it no longer asks how I want to handle the card or import the photos. It used to prompt me each time, but now it seems to open differently and my photos are not being imported the way I expect. In Settings > Devices > Autoplay, Autoplay is turned on. "Removable drive" is set to "Ask me every time," but "Memory card" is set to "Photos." Should "Memory card" also be set to "Ask me every time" to restore the prompt?

Yes. If you want Windows to prompt you each time you insert an SD card, set both the removable-drive and memory-card Autoplay options to "Ask me every time." If "Memory card" is set to "Photos," Windows may automatically open the Photos app instead of asking what you want to do.

In short:

  • Leave Autoplay turned on
  • Set "Removable drive" to "Ask me every time"
  • Set "Memory card" to "Ask me every time"

That should restore the choice prompt when you insert the card. If it still doesn’t, you can also import manually through File Explorer or your photo app.

Assuming what you're trying to do is transfer images from an SD card to your Windows computer... (your question is not exactly clear at this point)

If I look at Settings/Devices/Autoplay - it's turned on and set to ask me every time for removable card and Photos for memory card. Should that be ask me every time too?

Yes.
