How do I keep a moving car sharp while blurring the background?

I’ve seen photos of moving cars where the car looks sharp but the background is blurred, as if a slow shutter speed was used. How is this effect created, and what shooting technique should I use?

Slow down the shutter and track the car. It takes some practice but it's pretty easy.
I have some examples of some results on my flickr page, More.

This is usually done with panning. Use a slower shutter speed, then follow the car smoothly with the camera as it moves. If your camera movement matches the car’s speed, the car can stay relatively sharp while the background streaks into motion blur.
It takes practice to get the motion smooth and the timing right. Start with a slower shutter speed than you’d normally use for freezing action, track the subject through the frame, and keep moving the camera with the car as you take the shot.
