When I use the Perspective transform tool in GIMP, a large grid appears over the layer and makes it hard to see the image while adjusting the corners. Can this grid overlay be turned off or reduced?

Yes. In the Perspective tool’s Tool Options, look for the Guides setting and change it to No guides to remove the grid overlay. If you still want some visual help, you can also choose one of the other guide options for a less dense grid.
