I’m using a Nikon Coolscan 4000 with VueScan and want to make sure the scanner is focusing properly. Where are the focus controls in VueScan, and can I manually adjust focus if autofocus isn’t giving the best result?

The Input Tab has a focus and auto focus option in Vuescan.
+ lots of experimenting. Don't forget to save your settings regularly in a way you can remember what they are.

Yes. In VueScan, the focus controls are on the Input tab, where you can use Focus and Auto Focus. If autofocus doesn’t give the result you want, manual focusing may require some experimentation to compare results and find the sharpest setting. It’s also a good idea to save your settings as you test so you can keep track of what worked best. For film scanners, checking sharpness on a preview or scan at high magnification is the practical way to confirm focus accuracy.
