How can I improve scans of very thin underdeveloped negatives in VueScan?

I’m scanning very thin, underdeveloped film negatives with a Nikon Coolscan and trying to recover as much image detail as possible. In VueScan, the results look extremely grainy. I understand there may be hard limits to what can be recovered, but are there any useful settings or workflow tips for getting a better result from thin negatives?

Does it have to be done in Vuescan? If you have any postprocessing software that works with layers, you can address the problem by duplicating the base layer and using the blending options. Usually Multiply or Overlay will give the best results, but you can try other options. And don't forget that you can do this multiple times, if necessary. I've had good results with this method.

Thin, underdeveloped negatives often have very little density and signal, so scanner noise and grain can become much more visible. If VueScan alone isn’t giving a good result, a practical approach is to do the recovery in post-processing instead of trying to force everything in the scan.
A simple method is to scan as cleanly as possible, then open the image in software that supports layers. Duplicate the base layer and change the blend mode to Multiply or Overlay; both can strengthen weak tones. You can duplicate and blend more than once if needed, adjusting opacity to control the effect.
This won’t create detail that isn’t on the negative, but it can make a thin scan look fuller and more usable. If the negative is extremely weak, there may still be a limit to how much can be recovered.
