How do I export JPEGs from Lightroom without adding parent keywords from a hierarchy?

I export RAW files from Lightroom as JPEGs to the same folder and add them back into the catalog with metadata included. One of my photos has a hierarchical keyword like animal > mammal > cat, but after export the JPEG is imported with animal, mammal, and cat as separate keywords. I want the exported JPEG to keep only the original leaf keyword (cat) automatically. Is there a way to do that in Lightroom?

You can edit individual keyword tags in Lightroom, and set them to 'Include on Export' (the default) or not. In your case, if you edit 'animal' and 'mammal' by right-clicking the keywords and choosing 'Edit keyword tag' you can uncheck this option and it will no longer export. See the screenshot below for an example. enter image description here

Yes. In Lightroom, parent keywords in a hierarchy can be set not to export.

Right-click each parent keyword, choose Edit Keyword Tag, and disable Include on Export for keywords like animal and mammal. Leave it enabled for the leaf keyword (cat). After that, exported JPEGs will include only the keywords marked for export.

So if animal and mammal are set to not export, the JPEG should retain just cat in its metadata.
