How do I edit only one photo when viewing multiple images in Aperture 3?

In Aperture 3, I often compare several photos side by side in Viewer mode by Command-clicking or Shift-clicking multiple images. That works well for comparing shots, but when I try to rate, reject, or reset adjustments, the action seems to apply to all visible images instead of just the one I want.

Is there a way to make Aperture apply changes only to the currently selected image while multiple photos are open in Viewer mode?

As Jukka mentions in a comment, you can use the "Primary only" button:

Primary Only

This button is located just below the bottom-right of the main viewer window.

This ensures that any amendments are only done to the image you have selected (with a grey border). I've tested this and it works fine for me in Aperture 3.

Yes. In Aperture 3, use the Primary only button in Viewer mode. It’s located near the bottom-right of the main viewer window.

When Primary only is enabled, adjustments and actions apply only to the primary selected image—the one with the grey border—instead of all images currently shown.

So if you’re comparing several photos side by side, select the image you want to affect, turn on Primary only, and then apply your rating, reject flag, or reset adjustments. That lets you keep the multi-image comparison view while editing just one photo at a time.
