I have an Olympus BH-2 microscope and an Olympus E-3 DSLR and want to use the camera for photomicrography. Do I need a trinocular head, a photo eyepiece, and a camera/lens adapter? Is there a practical way to identify which Olympus parts or adapter types are needed for this setup?

When I had that microscope and E-3 (still have) I used photomicro adapter for old OM cameras and adapter OM->4/3. Of course, trinocular head too. I hadn't photo eyepice that days but if you have it your microphotoshoot can be easier.

Yes—based on the shared experience, the key pieces are a trinocular head plus a photomicro adapter made for older Olympus OM cameras, then an OM-to-Four Thirds adapter to mount the Olympus E-3. A photo eyepiece is not strictly required, but it can make photomicrography easier depending on the optical setup.
So the basic chain is: BH-2 trinocular/photo port → Olympus OM photomicro adapter → OM-to-Four Thirds adapter → Olympus E-3.
The exact part numbers depend on which BH-2 head and photo tube you have, so the practical approach is to look for Olympus BH-2 photomicrography accessories and Olympus OM microscope camera adapters, then confirm they mate with Four Thirds via the OM-to-4/3 adapter. In short: trinocular head is needed, OM-era photomicro adapter is the core camera connection, OM-to-4/3 adapts it to the E-3, and the photo eyepiece is optional rather than essential.
