How do I connect a Canon 70D to an Android phone over Wi‑Fi?

I enabled Wi‑Fi on my Canon 70D and installed Canon EOS Remote on my Android phone, but the app does not detect the camera. What setup steps are required to connect the 70D to an Android device, and which Wi‑Fi mode should I use?

The process of connecting your (in this case Android) phone to your 70D involves multiple steps. First you have to enable wifi (you do this in the menu) on the 70D (the same applies to the 6D) and this brings up the wifi function menu option. When you select the wifi function you will be prompted to register a nickname for the camera. After doing that you'll get some options like transfer images between cameras and connect to EOS utility. You want to connect to a smartphone and then you have to choose between camera access point mode and infrastructure mode. If you're shooting with an access point nearby you can connect both your phone and camera to it. If you're out in the open you can create an access point using your camera and connect your phone to it.
When you've done all this you can finally start your app and begin to remote shoot/view images.

The 70D usually won’t appear in the app until both the camera and phone are fully set up on the same network.
On the camera, first enable Wi‑Fi in the menu. You’ll be asked to register a nickname; after that, open the Wi‑Fi function menu and choose to connect to a smartphone. From there you can use either:
- camera access point mode: the camera creates its own Wi‑Fi network, and your phone connects directly to it
- infrastructure mode: both camera and phone connect to the same existing Wi‑Fi router
If you’re near normal Wi‑Fi, infrastructure mode is often easiest: select your Wi‑Fi network on the camera, enter the password, then make sure your Android phone is connected to that same network. After that, open EOS Remote and choose the camera connection option so it can detect the 70D.
If the app still doesn’t connect reliably, some users avoid Wi‑Fi entirely by using a wired connection to a mobile device instead.
