I want to try reverse-lens macro on a Nikon DSLR and I'm not sure how to choose a reversing ring. Nikon's site doesn't list rings by lens model, and online stores show many options. For a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G on a Nikon body, what specs matter when choosing a reversing ring?

You base a reversing ring on the filter thread size and mount for your camera. To determine your size, check this question. That particular lens has a 58mm filter size, so you need something like this that uses the Nikon mount.
I'm assuming you mean the 50mm f/1.8 G and not the D, since your D3100 won't autofocus with the D but will with the G. If you mean the D version, its 52mm.

Choose a reversing ring based on two things: your camera mount and your lens’s front filter-thread size. The ring needs a Nikon F-mount on the camera side, and thread size that matches the lens on the other side.
For the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G, the filter thread is 58mm, so you’d want a Nikon F to 58mm reversing ring. If you meant the older 50mm f/1.8D version, that lens uses a 52mm filter thread, so you’d need a Nikon F to 52mm ring instead.
So the key is not the lens name by itself, but the lens’s filter diameter plus your camera mount.
