How do different photo papers affect the look of a print, and how should I choose one?

A local print shop offers several paper options, including photographic, fine art, velvet, cotton textured, and Hahnemühle German Etching. I want to print colour or black-and-white photos for display at home, and I’m not sure how to choose between them. What practical differences should I expect, and is there anything I should watch out for? For example, does a textured paper like German Etching suit certain images better than others?

My recommendation is that you ask for some samples to the provider. You probably could ask a small sized reproduction of one of your photos on different papers, and see the results.

You can still use this samples in your house, and then, after the experience, sending the file for a big print.

The most practical advice is to test before committing to a large print. Paper choice can change the look and feel of a photo a lot, especially with colour, contrast, surface texture, and how much detail appears to “pop.”

A good approach is to ask the print provider for sample prints, or have one of your own images printed small on several paper types. Then compare them in person and even view them at home where the final print will hang.

This matters because textured and fine-art papers can give a more tactile, artistic look, while smoother photographic papers often feel more straightforward and photo-like. Whether that’s better depends on the image and your personal taste.

So yes, certain papers may suit certain photos better, but there isn’t one universally best choice. The safest way to decide is by seeing the same image on different papers and choosing the version you prefer before ordering a large print.
