How can I use studio strobes with a Canon 60D that has no PC sync port?

My Canon 60D doesn’t have a PC sync socket. Is there an adapter I can use to trigger studio strobes from the camera, such as a hot-shoe to PC sync adapter? I know wireless triggers are an option, but I’m looking for a simpler wired solution if possible.

Yes you can get a hotshoe adaptor with a PC sync port:

Cheap versions are also available from eBay.

If you are using a ancient flashgun which is likely to have a trigger voltage in excess of 5V then I would recommend using a Wien SafeSync to protect the camera electronics:

Yes. You can use a hot-shoe adapter that adds a PC sync port, then connect your strobe with a standard sync cable. This is a common wired workaround for cameras like the Canon 60D that lack a built-in PC terminal.

One caution: if you’re connecting older flash units or studio lights, check their trigger voltage first. Some older flashes can have high trigger voltages that may damage the camera’s hot shoe electronics. In that case, use a trigger-voltage protection device such as a Safe-Sync type adapter between the camera and the flash connection.

So the basic options are:

  • hot-shoe to PC sync adapter for a direct wired connection
  • a protective Safe-Sync style adapter if the flash trigger voltage may be unsafe
  • wireless triggers if you prefer cable-free operation
