I'm shooting long-exposure photos with a Canon SX210 IS running CHDK and want to save battery power. Is there a way to turn off the LCD/backlight while taking the shot, or is this controlled differently when using CHDK?

Generally, you press the DISP button to cycle through the various display options, one of which is off.
No experience with CHDK, but that's how regular Canons work.
Editing much later to add: I have since installed CHDK on my S90, and the DISP button works the same as with the stock firmware. So simply pressing it should cycle you through basic display, extended info display, and display off.

On Canon compact cameras like the SX210 IS, you can usually press the DISP button to cycle through the display modes, including a mode where the screen is off. According to users with CHDK installed, the DISP button still works the same way as in the stock firmware: it cycles through basic display, detailed display, and display off. So try pressing DISP until the LCD turns off before or during your long-exposure shooting. If it doesn’t behave that way, check whether a CHDK setting is overriding normal display behavior.
