How can I turn a photo's GPS coordinates into location keywords automatically?

I have photos with embedded GPS coordinates and would like to convert those coordinates into human-readable location tags automatically. For example, a point near the Olympic Park in London might become keywords such as Stratford, London, England, UK, Great Britain, and Western Europe.
Is there software or a workflow that can do this kind of reverse lookup so the location can be stored as descriptive tags or keywords for stock photography or systems that do not use raw GPS data?

What you are looking for is software that does reverse geocoding. Googling around shows several packages that do it. Skyjuice is a package that claims to do it.
But this question has lots more answers including the claim, unverified by me but verified in the comments below, that Lightroom 4 does it! That would be cool.

Yes. The process you want is called reverse geocoding: taking GPS coordinates and looking up a human-readable place name hierarchy.
You’d typically use software or a service that reads the photo’s geotag and returns location names such as neighborhood, city, region, and country, which can then be written as keywords or metadata.
Based on the answers provided, options include:
- reverse-geocoding software packages
- Lightroom 4, which was noted in the linked discussion as being able to do this
- a package called Skyjuice, which claims to offer this feature
So the right search term is reverse geocoding. Once you use a tool that supports it, you can generate descriptive location tags automatically from the embedded GPS data.
