How can I stop a circular polarizing filter from loosening when I rotate it?

My circular polarizer tends to unscrew from the lens when I adjust it. Is there a safe way to keep it attached without risking it getting permanently stuck? I'm looking for a practical fix for the filter threads or handling technique.

I'd steer clear of anything that makes it actually stickier -- for fear of never separating them again! But perhaps the simplest solution would be to remember to only turn the polariser in the direction that you turn it to screw it in. ie, only ever clockwise (or counter clockwise, whichever it is)....

Yes — the safest fix is technique, not adding anything to the threads. Avoid thread compounds, lubricants, tape, or anything meant to increase “stickiness,” because they can make the filter hard or impossible to remove.

What usually helps is:

  • screw the polarizer on a bit more firmly to start with
  • rotate the front ring in the direction that tends to tighten the filter, not loosen it
  • make only small reverse adjustments if needed

Many photographers simply get used to turning the polarizer mostly in the tightening direction, which prevents it from backing off during use.

If you’re worried about tightening it too much, a filter wrench can help remove it later, so you can install it with a little more confidence.

In short: don’t put anything on the threads; mount it snugly and adjust it in the direction that keeps it tightened.
