How can I shoot a time-lapse sequence for star trails with a Sony a6500?

I want to create a star-trail image by taking repeated exposures and stacking them later. With a Sony a6500, is there an in-camera way to take a photo every set number of seconds, or do I need extra hardware or software? If I need something external, what type of device should I look for?

You can install on camera PlayMemories application named Time-lapse. Here is link to UK site.
Or you can use remote shutter like this.
If you tether your camera you can use software like Capture One to shoot time-lapse sequences.
NB! No affiliation with any of the above companies.

Yes — what you need is an interval shooting setup for time-lapse. On a Sony a6500, community answers suggest three ways to do it:
- Use Sony’s PlayMemories Time-lapse app on the camera.
- Use a remote shutter/intervalometer, which is the external device commonly used to trigger photos every set number of seconds.
- Tether the camera to a computer and use software such as Capture One to run the sequence.
For star trails, the intervalometer approach is a common choice if you want a simple standalone solution. Then you can stack the resulting images later to build the trails.
