How can I set aperture and shutter speed manually while letting my Nikon D90 choose ISO?

I want to use my Nikon D90 with a fixed aperture and shutter speed—for example f/1.4 and 1/60 s—while having the camera automatically choose the ISO for the available light. Is there a mode on the D90 that does this?

It sounds like you are interested in an Auto ISO type mode, that Pentax refers to as TAv mode. This allows you to manually adjust the aperture and shutter speed, and the camera determines the optimal ISO.

Nikon does not have a special name for this mode, but you can achieve the same results by putting the camera into "M" for manual mode, and setting your ISO to Auto ISO. In your case, just set it to "M" mode, Auto ISO, with an aperture of f/1.4 and a shutter speed of 1/60.

Yes. On the Nikon D90, use Manual (M) mode together with Auto ISO.

Set the camera to M, choose your desired aperture and shutter speed, then enable Auto ISO in the menu. The camera will keep your aperture and shutter speed fixed and adjust ISO to maintain exposure.

So for your example, if your lens supports f/1.4, set:

  • Aperture: f/1.4
  • Shutter speed: 1/60 s
  • ISO: Auto ISO enabled

This gives you the effect of a “shutter + aperture priority” mode, even though Nikon labels it as Manual mode with Auto ISO. One advantage is that you can usually limit the ISO range the camera is allowed to use.
