How can I scan 35mm film with sprocket holes on an Epson V500 without blue blotches?

I’m scanning 35mm film on an Epson V500 and want to include the sprocket holes, so I’m not using the standard film holder. When I scan the film directly, I get blue blotches/splotches in the image. I’ve seen the same issue in both Epson Scan and VueScan. What causes this, and is there a way to scan without the blotches while still showing the sprockets?

the blue splotches are from surface contact with the negatives. If you don't want to use the film mask try putting strips of thin cardboard on either side of the film strip. Part of the reason for the film mask/carrier is to prevent just this thing from happening by providing space above and below the negative so there is no surface contact.

The blue blotches are most likely caused by the film making surface contact with the scanner glass or another surface. The film holder normally prevents this by keeping the negative slightly raised, with space above and below it.

If you want to include the sprocket holes, try raising the film off the glass without covering the edges. A simple way is to place thin strips of cardboard on either side of the film strip as spacers. That helps avoid direct contact while still leaving the sprockets visible in the scan.

In short: the issue is physical contact, not the scanning software. Keeping the film slightly elevated should eliminate the blotches.
